NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service
Congestion Measurement
Client: Department of Planning and Environment (DPE)

The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) manages 889 national parks and reserves with varying levels of visitation. The number of visits to NSW national parks is growing, with 51.6 million visits in 2016, 60 million in 2018 and 63 million expected in 2023.

In recognition of this increasing visitation to national parks throughout NSW, Ason Group worked with the DPE to undertake vehicle count data at 106 locations across 23 national parks. The collection of this data will form the evidence base to support further analysis and strategy development for the management of vehicular and parking congestion in national parks in NSW.

Our work included:
  • Coordination and installation of over 100 tube counters across 23 locations throughout NSW
  • Data cleansing and conversion of high volumes of data into industry standard data format for further downstream analysis
  • Detailed data analysis to identify irregularities in monitored volumes and to ascertain trends in visitation
  • Data visualisation using Tableau and Power BI to create dashboards for stakeholder communication
